right they only put out what is needed to keep everything going and keep battery up. usually just a few amps with a fully charged battery. I think the amp gauge should be fine. Many people seem to be scared of them. I think that is a result of very poor quality amp gauges that were in 70s vehicles that had fire and failure issues.
