Starter bendix

Starting the '61 WM300 for the first time in a long time (I know...I know) and I get nothing but a spinning starter. Sounds like the bendix gear is not engaging. I'm going to pull the starter and check things out, but what should I be looking for. Do I need to tear down the starter to work on the bendix? I assume I will need to clean everything related to the bendix and lube. Should I use a dry lube once things are cleaned up.
Just fishing for input before I tear into it.
