all the hardware stores I went to only had shoulder-cut screws in that thread size (I don't remember the proper name) I ordered from McCarr Master and got the correct ones.
Seems like this is a relatively isolated issue, but nobody in the stores could help me at all.
For the glass tape I just had a local shop put it together...don't know the thickness.
