I think the twist comes from our feeling of loosing something we never really had. These things were always happening but we were unaware in our younger days and were sold a false perspective.
The statue of Liberty is a soft analogy to begin with.
The statue was a gift from France and the base was to be built by the USA. The tablet Liberty is holding represents the Law. As a Republic under rule of law, something the French shared with us at the time. The date July 4 1776 id inscribed on the tablet.
