As Paul will tell you Plannishing is smoothing metal. It can be done with a plannishing hammer. which is an arbor with a pneumatic hammer built in with a screw adjustment to close the gap between the hammer bit and the steel. It can also be done by hand and there are a couple videos on u-tube describing the process. Plannishing a weld while it is still hot and maleable makes the job a bit easier.
