Sterling: I used grease on the roller bearings. I don't believe you have any options. To put the sub-assembly in, straight and easy seems to work... I'm not following your snap ring question, can you show a pic?
Much to my chagrin, all those bearings fall out when you take it apart...
Also, unless you don't mind leaks, you may want to think about new shift rail shafts. Kind of pricey, but Charles Talbert makes nice stainless ones. And on the input and output shafts I used speedy sleaves where they contact the seals.
