I took my WDX to the muffler shop. I had the exhaust pipe made longer than stock to move the muffler back out from under the cab floor. This required the tail pipe to be shorter. I also had them use a "straight through" muffler which had a smaller outside diameter which helped in hanging the muffler.
This was an improvement from stock. In Texas, it's good to eliminate as much heat from under the cab as possible.
Back in 1958, I ran a straight pipe on my 1950 Plymouth with the 218 c.i.d., flat head six. Sounded good!
