#2 wire is 2 sizes up from what the code requires (#6) for a 50 amp circuit. That will give you plenty of extra capacity to reduce the voltage drop. The two breakers tied together are correct. Keep them tied together, because both sides of a 240V circuit must get switched off even if only one side shorts to ground.

As others have suggested, a 5 HP compressor is marginal for running high-demand tools like buffers and sanders continually, so for that reason you might want to upgrade. I find it adequate for what little I do. I don't mind having to take a short break while it refills sometimes. The wire will be okay for either one.
