Interesting. I wonder if the mag chloride they're using all over the roads these days is somehow especially corrosive, maybe even worse than regular salt. Clearly the "boots" don't really keep the road grunge out of the wheel cylinders. Sounds like there might be an opportunity here for someone with an old screw machine to set up to make non-aluminum brake cylinder pistons. With a little more tooling, but still cheap tooling, and much cheaper materials cost, they could probably be made of sintered iron powder. Porosity would be okay there.
