Hi Sherman. The book does mention that nicks should not be left on the wires, but that didn't concern me too much. What disturbed me was reading other forums where electricians talked about finding broken wires in existing installations with the breaks starting at nicks. Even worse were the stories of poor connections resulting in the wires and wire nuts turning into a molten mass of copper and plastic, and knowing that one possible cause of a poor connection would be a wire that has broken but the two halves are still in contact. I have to think many of those examples were probably pretty deeply nicked, but who knows.

Anyway, I think you are right in that I'm probably making a bigger deal of this than I need to, but to make myself feel better, I went up to the attic yesterday and pulled loose the suspect connections and if they were damaged more than I liked, I cut off the damaged part, stripped off insulation to expose some new, fresh wire, re-twisted the fresh wire, then clipped off the short bit of damage I had caused with the pliers on those new twists, and put the nuts back on. I feel better about the whole thing, and I got a little more practice at doing this, so my technique is now better. Never hurts to get more practice.
