We have quite a bit of The Bois D'Arc (bodarc)/hedge apple/osage orange and ours around here have thorns a lot of the time. I've heard it is a male/female tree thing but they are wicked as well. Normally 2 inches or less and are worse on fast growing new growth trees.

The absolute worst is when you get Osage Orane growing with Multiflora rose under them. intertwining thorns between to 2 are horrible. I had situation where I've had to have someone cut me out as the will wrap you up like an octopus. We had to clear a 30 acre pasture That was full of that.

Owner wanted the Osage and rose out so the other trees could grow. Ended up using a tractor to lift the limbs so you could get to the trunk to trim and cut. Otherwise you'd get wrapped up. those thorns go thru tires as well.

AS you said, VERY hard on chains when tree is green. Cutting the dead ones and you basically have to sharpen every tree. Best Hottest burning firewood you can get with a LOT of BTU's but I don't go out of my way to get it.
