Is a 230 recommended over a 218

The machine shop says my engine is as far gone as engines go. So before I spend the max money to rebuild it, I plan to look for a replacement as I have so much work to do on the truck, I do not need an engine right away. I have heard that I should stick with a 230. I would appreciate comments on the performance differences.
