The 5 acre hillside behind my house was planted with locust for fence posts as you say. Weird part about it they rot fairly quickly after they die. If you cut them while they are green and healthy, they are like pressure treated. Gotta get the nails in quick though as if they are dry you have to predrill. Osage orange/hedge is the same way.
As you well know, they normally aren't this bad.
Birds had a nest in this tree about 10 ft up. Imagine misjudging your landing.
