My 58 W500 stub axles don't have a groove in them to have a snap ring retaining them, the Warn M72 hubs just slide on. I have a 57 FDS750 and see it has different style drive flanges, I will pull one off to see if there is a snap ring on the stub axle.
I don't think these axles use snap rings to retain the stub axle outward, the inner axles have buttons on their ends in the carrier holding them out, these buttons have shims to set your .020 clearance in the drive flange.
