may need to reolace the engine

My engine has 1/2 dime sized checks of the top/side of pistons missing. The cylinders look surprisingly smooth. The crank has some "deep" grooves where the middle mains spun. The machine shop guy is going to evaluate what needs to be done to rebuild it. In the mean time I have started to look for someone with a running engine for sale. I talked to a guy 40 miles from me who has a "great" running engine that came from a forklift and is set up to run on propane. Is it worth checking out or any other leads near CALIF?
