I did not pull the engine, I am doing it in place. I think that was a good call. It is not too bad in place.

As for progress - I prior to this thread I was all ready to put everything back together and have it running by New Years...darn, I hoping for a "it doesn't matter!"...

Yesterday I honed the cylinders using a flex-hone. This was five minutes of fun, followed by three hours of cleaning. I used a toilet brush and soapy water then rise four times/cylinder and I thought it would be clean...wrong, the white-cloth test revealed grit. So I followed up with the near endless wiping down of the cylinders with a cloth. My hand doesn't fit into the cylinder so I used a tennis ball on a stick with a cloth wrapped around it (like a ghost). This works very well. I squirted WD40 on the cloth and kept going until it came back clean.

I cleaned off everything in the crank area to hopefully get any/all grit washed down from the hone. I brass-wire brushed the head and block and cleaned out all the head-bolt holes. Next will be the main bearings while I wait to resolve the piston bushing/pin issue.
