That's a good one. I once read that back in the 1950s when AT&T first switched from lead-covered cable to PVC-covered cable for its underground telephone cables they discovered that gophers could sniff the stuff out underground and would burrow right over to it and gnaw through it. They did extensive experimentation and ended up adding something to the PVC to make it distasteful to gophers. I know the field mice love to gnaw on my black poly water line, especially in places where there's an air pocket in the snow around it in the winter.
