Transfer Case Work

I'm rebuilding my transfer case, and just went to set the pre-load on the idler shaft bearings. I'm going by the book and trying to set the pre-load out of the case and set vertically in a vise. The book mentions a second spacer to go in between the top bearing and the washer/nut. Is this second spacer a special tool? I assume it's there to take up the space that would be occupied by the case when installed. Any help would be appreciated.
