Hey Jerry, just thought i would pull this out of the reply heap in case anyone else has input....
I use a smarty jr. programmer.on my 06 cummins.
I got it from a local shop, based on their recommendations.
basically what sold me was the fact that it is designed to produce the least amount of smoke and maximize mileage.
Note: you can still make it "roll-coal" if you want to set it up and drive like that.
it has several settings that can control your throttle response (POD-power on demand)
torque (basically how the auto trans lockup is used and how it uses the turbo)
timing (basically adjusting the injection events timing)
power level (3 settings for 1.mileage 2.towing 3.performance)
each power setting is an increase of about 30hp give or take, so the performance gives you about 400hp and some where around 800ft-lbs torque (some guys have dyno'ed a little more with basically stock + chip settups)
I typically use the milage setting, then bump the torque up to give me more direct drive so to speak. What can i say i am a torque junkie who has owned stick shifts my whole life till this auto, so i like this setting.
I have gotten as high as 23mpg calculated pump to pump (not the lie-o-meter) on highway driving around 55mph. this is in OD with low rpm and trans locked up.
Most of the time my short 5-10 mile city driving gives me about 16-19mpg depending on conditions. (trailers attached every few days)
I have also used the 400 pony setting to tow my trailer on some pretty hefty hills and got 19mpg most of the way was 65-70mph.
by the way with the 400 pony's and 800 ft-lbs got me a 15.126 second qtr mile time.
i like the chip alot, good control, doesn't feel like i am going to break anything...
hope this helps.
