Per Army TM 9-1808 A

Fit Piston Rings -- Measure cylinder bore diameter with dial gage near the bottom of the bore and use piston rings selected for that size bore. Place the rings squarely in the bottom of the cylinder bore and measure the end gap. If necessary, file
the ends of the rings with piston ring filer to create a gap of 0.007 to 0.015 inch.
