That sounds about right. I ran across an old newspaper with the Forest Service timber sale bid results from some date in the 1950s and they generally got $3 per thousand for fir and $2 per thousand for cedar, on the stump. All old-growth, of course. In those days, the stumpage was practically free, and all the money was in the milling.

These days it's the opposite. A mill that sells lumber for $800/thousand will sometimes pay $800/thousand for the logs (delivered). They make their profit on the fact that with their modern saws they can get a lot more lumber out of the logs than the logs scale out to using the old Scribner scale or something like it.
