I recently bought some stainless steel construction screws for a restroom project where they would be exposed and I didn't want them to rust, and I was surprised at how reasonable they were from some outfit off of ebay. I don't remember the exact price, but on a high-end deck or pool project, they would be well worth using. Even galvanized nails tend to crawl up out of the wood over the years with seasonal changes in moisture.

The old preservatives, like creosote, and pentachlorophenol ("penta"), were insoluble and non-corrosive, but the new environmentally good stuff consists of water-soluble salts like borax, copper, and zinc that are corrosive and leach out over time. I'm pretty sure they've discontinued CCA (chromated copper arsenate) as well, at least for civilian use.
