Alright Bob...you asked for it! :)
Around about the same time period...I would be early 20's, I built a 70's F350. It had the typical 390 in it that I rebuilt & I did some serious fancying up inside while I was at it.
Same cast of characters but different day...we were working on my driveway. I was widening it & needed many loads of gravel or rock to backfill a wall I'd built.
After calling a gravel company, I decided they were greedy & so I recruited Keith to join me on a drive to Britannia Beach, on the highway between Vancouver & Whistler to collect rocks & we'll haul the damn stuff ourselves. If any of you are familiar with the area...it's a dangerous road. Think #1 between LA & Santa Cruz Bob.
So in hindsight...this was obviously a dumb idea since I probably needed 20 truck loads of rock but we were young & full of energy but short on money :)
So each load was roughly 3 tons & we'd done about 3 loads. After we'd finish loading up, each time I would start up & then I'd show Keith what this baby was made of as I'd go through the gears & I could lift one of the front wheels off the ground as we'd accelerate...."nobody builds trucks like this Keith!" :)
Anyway, on about the fourth load & subsequent "Ride" home, we noticed somebody waving their arms at us?? Ever seen "Trains, Planes & Automobiles" when the folks are screaming at Candy & Martin, "YOU"RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!!!".....Ha Ha! How do they know where we're going???
OK...similar.
I pull over & decide since there's roughly a 200' drop to our death on the right, maybe we better give the machinery a once over.
We both give her a look over...check the light...all looks good...thanks pal..you're costing us time here.
Hop back in.."Watch this Keithbaby...nobody builds engines like this!" 1st gear...6000rpm....2nd gear...6000rpm...3rd gear 6000 BANG! All hell breaks loose.
I look in my side view mirror just in time to see my LR wheel go flying across the oncoming traffics lane & I mean this wheel misses a Suzuki Jeeps windshield by like 3" & miraculously lands in the ditch without injury. Us on the other hand...well the old Ford is trying to take an immediate RH turn over the edge & I'm wrestling with this steering wheel & it's about all I can do to keep it on the pavement.
We come to a rest & the LR drum is smashed & we've cut an inch deep groove in the road for about a hundred yards or so.
Keith...he's not talking to me...he hikes down the cliff & off he goes. I'm panicking because I know I'm in big trouble when Highway Patrol sees my load & here he is now pulling up behind!
No problem...weird?
Anyway he called a tow truck & the truck lifted it up & away I went in his passenger seat on route to my house...all good until he tries his brakes..."WHAT THE HELL YOU GOT IN THAT THING!
I guess his brakes weren't as impressed with the load as I was :)
Live & learn Bob.
Let that be a lesson to you youngsters!
:)
