Some are permanent, to keep leaves etc from falling into the valley on open runner designs. Others are basically built into the intake gasket. They both prevent oil from burning on the bottom of the heat crossover, and contaminating the oil with chunks of carbon.

But I' not sure if polys ever had them. But I wouod opt for one regardless.
