The pump pressurizes the block, 10 psi @ 3200 rpms.

I checked after a freeze plug blew out when I revved it. You can too by using that little bolt like plug in center of the head.

They are built that way to prevent hot spots in the block. Pressure raises the boiling point by 3 degrees for each pound of pressure, so 10 psi= 242 boiling point, more with antifreeze.
