What may not appear to be a concern to us, may be for close fitting moving parts.

If you attempt to remove the piston without removing the ring ridge, rings can wedge, lock and break the piston ring lands - piston areas between the rings. Now that might not be a concern if you're replacing the pistons, however the pistons, rings an cylinder have all worn together. If you install new rings or new pistons and rings in a cylinder that has a previous ring ridge, you run the risk of breaking the lands of the pistons - not a good thing. .004 may not seem like much, but do you want to take the chance of doing all the work you're doing to have it happen and then have to redo it?

In my opinion, ridge reamers are not the best choice to remove a ring ridge. They can leave a washboard effect on the cylinder wall and can also undercut the cylinder if you're not careful. You can get reasonably priced cylinder lathes off EBay that do will do nice job. Don't get in a hurry doing the work, take your time and do a good job!

Happy Thanksgiving :=)
