Wow, one day to do an in-place engine rebuild. It would take me that long just to round up the parts.

I'm replacing the oil pan gasket on my FFPW. By the time I clean up and paint the pan and get it back in, I will have several hours invested. And, I have a lift and air tools.

I know I am slow. There is no need for me to hurry. I just take my time, it results in fewer errors and is more enjoyable. But, it doesn't pay to be too optimistic when figuring how long a job will take. I think underestimating how long a major job will take and cost is the first step in making a good parts truck.

Every job I have done on an old FFPW seems to result in a cascading series of other things that need to be done. Someone will rebuild an old engine without replacing the crankshaft seal, checking the timing chain and re-grinding the valves and seats?

I spent at least a whole day cleaning and flushing the radiator and replacing the water distribution tube. The freeze plugs are almost impossible to replace with the fender off and you can't clean the engine properly with them in. And what about gapping the valves? That's a much easier job with the fender off. Just about every job on the engine is much easier with the fenders off.
