Doing rod/main bearings, rings: should I pull the motor?

Hi all,

I have decided not to do a complete rebuild, but to do the "low hanging fruit" and get the thing running again. So oil pressure/bearings is item one, and since I screwed up the one piston rod and I have to remove the head I am going to do the rings, since at about the same time the pressure dropped off the smoke kicked up. But, a little while back I did a cold compression test and I got 108-110 PSI on all cylinders, which I believe is pretty good. It is my hope is that things are in sufficiently good shape that I can just hone without worry and put in the same size rings.

My question - I think that the bearings on the cold floor are doable, but unpleasant (although the #1 might be a challenge). But the honing and subsequent cleaning (I've never done this), in the truck seems like it would be rough.

What are the opinions on taking the extra time to remove the engine and do everything out of the truck, versus doing things a bit slower without removing the engine? I'm leaning towards doing it, but would like to hear from those with experience.

Thoughts always appreciated.

don
