Sorry to disagree, but when I disassembled the 230 in my '49 a couple of years ago, it had somewhere around 8,000 miles on it since I had rebuilt it, and the bearings still had the gray/silver color on the. No copper to seen anywhere. Now, does the appearance of copper necessarily mean the bearings are totally worn out? I don't know, but I would tend to think so. I would probably replace them regardless, while the engine is apart. Of course, if the crankshaft journals are out of round, then that may warrant bigger repairs.
