I think you are over analyzing the coil. Try this simple test with the coil hooked up as normal to the engine.

Remove the spark plug wire from the center tower on the distributor cap, leave the other end connected to the coil tower. Hold the loose end about 1/4" to 3/8" away from a metal ground on the engine block.

Have a helper turn on the ignition switch and crank the engine over. You should get a nice blue arc that makes a snapping sound each time it fires. If not, I always suspect dirty points first, bad condenser second, and bad coil third.

This simple test eliminates the distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plugs from the possible problems, it lets you test the coil by itself.
