Hi Jerry,
Dont you know it!
I just finished a kitchen for some folks. He works for GE, and could get an employee discount on his appliances. He was very fussy and everything had to be perfect. I was installing the microwave / range hood and the gas company was to install the new gas stove. I had noticed a chunk od plastic broken off the stove, but as I hadnt unloaded it, nor was I going to install it, I wasnt going to mention it.
The day after we installed the microwave, I was met at the door by his wife, who was quite nice. She said that last night Dave had seen some big scratches in the face of the microwave, and I must have done it. She took me over to show me, and I couldnt see them, I finally got the light and angle just right and could see what she was showing me. The microwave was a super glossy black plastic. It looked like a pencil eraser had ben very lightly dragged across the surface. I could see no way to get rid of it, and since the customer is always right, I said I would take care of it. I called GE, and was told they would cover it under their 30 day scratch and dent warranty. Cool. That afternoon when he got home, I told him about it being covered, and pointed out the chunk missing from the stove, He was all upset about that, (didnt blame me for it) I figured they could get them both repaired for free. As it turned out, the local company which would do the repairs was a real pain to deal with and would not put it through as a warranty claim. I got a call from the owner saying that out of frustration, they had just gone ahead and ordered the parts and I would have to pay for them. I said that was fine (but not feeling very fine about it) and I asked him if the guy was going to fix the stove at the same time, figuring maybe we would split the service call fee. The clincher was, he told me he decided the chunk missing from the stove didnt bother him so he was going to leave it. I held my tongue, but it was really hard not to call him all sorts of unpleasant things! The customer is always right, the customer is always right, the customer is always right, the custo.......
Tim
