I was told straight from Cummins they do not stamp their B-series engine blocks with a serial, CPL, or any other identifying numbers. Mike as far as identifying your injection pump (IP) there is a tag or area on the pump side with the pertinent IP numbers and a Bosch or Cummins dealer can decipher them for you. Sounds like you have a VE type Bosch IP they are by far the most common.
The engines used in the repower of delivery vans were mostly reman engines. When they got rebuilt the CPL tags were removed. Another issue is the CPL tags are riveted to the aluminum gear case which is a removable part and gets cleaned separately from the cast iron block, So even if the tag is there that doesn't mean the gear case wasn't swapped from another engine during the mass production reman process. The real kick in the pants comes when you need to order any parts from Cummins. Their entire parts system is CPL number driven. I have a 4bt Jeep and I really laid into a Cummins regional manager when he over heard my conversation with the parts guy and more or less told me they can't look any part up if I don't have my proper CPL #. I lit him up like a roman candle about Cummins and their stupid no block SN, CPL tag mounted to a removable gear case, and Cummins reman removing the original CPL tag and not keeping the original gear cases with their respective blocks. He was at a total loss for words because I was absolutely correct on each account. Thats when they finally started looking my parts up with the old parts books they kept around "just in case".
