While I was still working PFB tried those out on several rigs that had steep hills to run in their area. Our Engine got s set. I drove the truck and I hung real iron and Bruce (engine driver) didn't seem all that impressed with them. I do recall after a couple years the engine was also using real iron again. I couldn't see how they could really be all that effective but school buses around here seem to almost all have them.

Chains aren't even always the only answer. We were running chains long after everyone else dropped theirs because of the snow and ice staying on the dark side of the hills we responded on. We took the truck out to go check on how things were once after nobody but us had chains. I could not make it without tearing up chain so I stopped. It made no sense to have chains if you spun out anyway so we pulled them off since conditions were not that bad. I told Dick (truck Officer) I felt like I could make it without the chains and so I went ahead on it and walked right up with no trouble. Of course it may have taken only a bit of difference in road conditions and I may not have made it.
