See page 248 and fig 14-38 for comment on the servo design. The servo function explanation coincides with my long post text.

Other parts of this document coincide with my posted text.

One thing they seem to miss regarding the purpose of the groove in fig 14-13 is that it prevents a hot stripe at the center of the lining due to high pressure at the web line. That hot stripe is notorious for causing hard spots in drums, a metallurgical change in the drum that can be difficult to machine on a drum lathe,
