GPS tells you exactly where you are to lots of decimal places of accuracy, but that doesn't mean it tells you how to get to where you need to be. More important, it doesn't give you the strength and stamina to get there when your ATV or snowmobile is stuck, or the route it tells you to take means slogging through brush and logs on steep hills in bad weather. The GPS doesn't keep you warm and dry on a cold, rainy night. All the GPS does is tell you where you are, which is often a completely irrelevant piece of information. If it gives you directions to get somewhere, it doesn't consider the terrain or how good a condition you're in. I bet for every case where a GPS has "saved" someone, there's another case where it lulled them into a false sense of security. Whenever I have people try to follow any computer mapping program's directions for getting to my place, they end up getting lost and going in circles, because the roads don't have signs with names that they expect, there are side roads that the program doesn't tell them about, and a lot of times the program doesn't even know which are the good roads and which are the impassable cat trails.
