I was told this 30 years ago by a mechanic who was in his 60s then. He was a mechanic all of his life, and maybe gaskets and sealants were different then. It does seem most people coat both sides of the gasket and both surfaces. I'm a carpenter...woodworker...no gaskets needed. :)
