I always protect my vehicles with a film of oil. Dump down the rocker panels, door bottoms, where ever water can get trapped and cause rust cancer. If it's rusted thru you're too late! A friend of mine stopped by the other day and we were looking at his truck. The tail gate was rusted thru on the bottom. I said did you oil it a couple years ago when I suggested it? He said he didn't get to it. I said, too late, then I pointed out the bottoms of his doors starting to rust up, I said better get some oil down there.
