Greg: I have a dial indicator and magnetic base etc. This is EASY to do when the transmission is out, so do it on the bench. You will see that the backlash is very slightly detectable when it is right as measured by the dial indicator. I suspect after mechanics did one or two with a dial indicator they resorted to feel.
I think the most important thing is not to set the mesh to tight.
