electrical plan to fire up engine

I just got my new truck home. Pictures to come.
I would like to fire up the engine to check it out. The wiring is shot. I have no idea if the generator and VR work, probably not. I was thinking to upgrade to 12 volts and an alternator. I have never done this conversion and i think Vintage Power wagons has a kit. I really want to just do the temp wiring, basic tune up, plugs. Not sure how the alternator connects up to the coil, distributor, etc. First, Does the basic idea make sense. Second how do I wire it up. I actually rewired my 1940 Plymouth PU 30 years ago following the schematic.
