It all depends on what your intended use or plans are. To put a high end paint job on a mud truck is not what most would see as a smart thing to do. Quality, big name paints, are expensive. Some PPG stuff is over $600/gal and that's JUST the color. No reducer, catalyst, primer, filler and such figured in. It adds up VERY quickly.

You can use tractor paint that is found at farm supply stores but a lot of it used to fade rather quickly. I noticed now they hardener available and I used some on a project and it still looks good. Not a good test though as I don't let it set outside in the sun when not in use.

On quotes, again, it all depends on the scope you are looking for. Frame off, outside only, door jams and dash, take anything off, underside the hood, etc all come into play.

Finding a good shop is not easy either. If they have more than one person you may get the trainee as opposed to the guy that did your friends whom you were impressed with.

That is why I did mine myself. It was my first complete paint job using base clear, first cut and buff. It can be done but it takes a lot of time and willingness to do it.

We have a couple of shops here that do cars for checkbook street rodders. They go $30,000 + for the paint work. They are VERY "proud" of their work but they have the clients that will pay it. These guys have the name and hire regular Joes to do the dirty work. I've seen some of the cars when they come out of the booth and the do a LOT of cut and buff to get them to the final product.

Ask around locally who does nice paint work. Local cruise ins and such are a good place to find leads.
