Radiator Petcock Question

I got a FFPW radiator back from the radiator guy. He said he tried to remove the petcock but couldn't. Now there is a penny soldered over the opening.

Not having a petcock doesn't seem like it's going to work for me. The bottom radiator hose is just to difficult to get to.

I tried to remove a petcock from a scrap radiator I have. It broke off too.

Is there any trick to getting the petcock off? Once you mess it up, can you drill and tap out the hole and replace it with a standard petcock from NAPA? Is it a NPT thread?
