The little Bats we have in the Mountains are amazing little critters. Sometime this summer, a Bat got into my wood pellet stove in the shop. I just found him a few days ago. Pellet stoves are totally air tight except for the path to the chimney.

This Bat had to enter the top of my 25 foot, 8 inch stainless stack, drop the 25 feet to the clean out Tee. I had not yet cleaned the stove so the fly ash from the wood stove was deep in the clean out Tee. Somehow he avoided 'quick sanding' himself in the clean out Tee. Then he somehow arose about 8 inches to the 8" stack lateral run into the shop. There he dropped 6 feet in the 3 inch wood stove stack. His expedition somehow lead him thru the squirrel cage blower, then a couple of sharp turns deep inside the exhaust route. Then up thru a very small space to the smoke shelf, where he dropped into the actual fire box. From there he moved to the glass door. Thats where he died, feet on the glass door frame looking out at freedom and sun.

How did he find his way on that route. Sometimes makes me wonder if they are truly totally blind. As neat as they are, care must be given as they can be a rabies carrier.

Paul
