I came into the truck cheap, and it's more about the project then the truck (although it is also about plowing the snow!). If/when the time comes that I need to sink a bit pile of money into the engine, it is definitely something that I will take into consideration. It's hard to know when to cut ones losses sometimes...
That said, your advice is certainly something that is well worth considering at the beginning, rather then half-way (or 10th of the way) in.
