With the original style pto that has both front and rear outputs it is possible to put the shaft in backwards. After rebuilding mine, I discovered this when I went to put the covers on (the part that holds the output seal). One side has a machined recess and the other side has a lip on it equal to the recess on the first one. Even with the bearings fully seated, I couldn't get the cover with the lip on it to go on all the way. Instead of taking it back apart just to turn around the shaft, I asked a machinist were I work to mill about a sixteenth of an inch off the lip. Fitted on fine then. The output shaft may look the same end for end, but as I discovered, there is a slight difference in where on the shaft the bearings mount on. Hope this helps, Robert
