Charlie:

I see that alot of people here on the forumn are slamming you for your idea. Thats really too bad...You are a valuble resource to us. Well I do appreciate and enjoy your input to the forumn. Well regarding the 4.3..It is really the only modern V6 that has enuff torque to move a truck that heavy, and in all actuality it should fit rather well because it is so compact. The only fitment problem that gets me about a 4.3 or any Vee type engine in a early PW is width. Those hoods and front ends are very very narrow. I bet it would fit good in a M-37 tho. What do you plan to do as far as fuel system goes? Are you gonna stick with the Vortec EFI system? If so, I wish ya luck in hooking that all up cause it will be a pain. Thats alot of sensors and wiriing. Also here is a down side to the Vortec injection system: The injectors tend to "Leak" really bad.. Forgive me if I dont make myself clear when I explain it..but what happens on the Vortec injector system is after a few years the injector lines inside of the intake will get very brittle, crack and will start leaking really bad. It will literally be spewing gas all over the inside of the intake. It is hard to find this problem as the only way to tell is when you start smelling gas all over the place. Then the injector lines are very expensive and hard to replace. When I was working as an auto tech, I had to fix a few of these, and I have heard from several Mechanics about the same problem happening. But the Vortec system is very responsive and efficent. Something else to think about incase perhaps you cant get the EFI to work is to use a carb. Early 4.3s like in Astro vans had 4bbl intakes. Something else that may work would be to put a 2bbl intake off a Chevy 3.8 engine or better known as the 229 engine. (THe Chevy 3.8 is a TOTALLY diffrent animal than the Buick 3.8) A Chevy 229 V6 is pretty much the same as a 4.3...I say this because It is simply a smallblock 305 with 2 cyls choped off. These engines were made from the ealy to mid '80's, and the intakes should work on a 4.3 Also the 229 used HEI ignition and is easy to hook up because it only takes just a hot wire to get it working.

Best of luck on your project.
