You are wrong about a cylinder assist being more vulnerable than a box.Most heavy offroad equipment utilises the cylinder assist system it is much less prown to damage in that any back lash from obsticales can be obsorbed at the axle and tie rod and not transfered as much to the drag link and steering box.Just take a look at an off road dump or all terain forklift.I have a 68WM300 with a garrison unit that is built like a fort.I checked with garrison and all the parts are still available so you could add this unit to any powerwagon.Almost all overtheroad semitractors run this type of powersteering.If you want the Garrison info and part numbers let me know.
