The scene which you described sounds like it was based on real events. On the National Geographic special on sunday night the scene that you described was discussed by Pearl Harbour suvivors , It did happen , the man in question was mess hall staff and was not permitted to use a wepon because of his color .The vets that were discussing this incident said he downed two planes and never recived the proper recognition, again because he was black.
