I suspect, but don't know, that the gauge would work, to some degree, at least show some life, regardless of which sender was used.

Which gauge do you have, the two post or the three post? Working three post gauges are pretty hard to come by.

I don't think changing a truck to 12 volts is generally a good idea. But, being able to use 12 volt fuel gauges is one good reason as 12 volt gauges are relatively easy to come by.
