I have an older 12" with the long bed and for my uses it is a great lathe. No, they were not the best lathes ever built, but they will hold their own against anything else in their price range. There are some good discussion groups for Craftsman/Atlas lathe owners on Yahoo Groups, and lots of parts available on ebay. Like several have already said, the machinist is more important than the machine. There is an old saying which applies here, "It is a poor workman indeed who blames his tools."
