what would be the effect if the distributor were in 180 degrees backwards?

I got my new carb in today and the truck idled better but still sounds like its starving for fuel. I get a bogged down suction sound from the motor as if its getting way to much air for the amount of fuel. Se the odd thing is my motor ran great before my machinist work. He told me that the distributor was in there 180 degrees backwards. But when i get my truck back the carburetor that i had vintage rebuild that worked fine when i took it off...is now the problem. Thats two carbs that were rebuilt that make it run like shit. It doesn't ad up. The thing is that i know my machinist is very smart with these motors. He did a 251 for my friends WM300 which runs great also he used to maintain a fleet of Sno cats with 251 motors so hes pretty familiar. I took the truck to him he says it the carburetor...Im about sick of this coking out bs. I ready to drive the darn thing.

Its getting spark. its getting fuel to the carb at least (filter is plum full. It has to either be timing or the carb. I may ask my friend to barrow his rebuilt BBS carb off his 66 WM 300 which i know works right and try it on mine. But seems odd the distributor gets flipped 180 degrees and now my truck occasionally runs well but usually sputters around most of the time. My machinist says hell will resolve the problem with me tuesday after work.
